Today was the first day we had class. It was however at 3:30pm, so I had the whole morning to kill before hand.
I had already intended to meet with some of the other classmates at 12:30 to look into getting bus passes. I headed off early south of the Arno in order to check out the Piazza Michelangelo, which I was told has an amazing view of the city. The streets south of the Arno are much quieter then the north, so it was a pleasure weaving through those narrow roads, as opposed to the quite crowded streets west of where I live. I found a wi-fi port right before the hill heading up to the Piazza, so I used it to check my emails and upload some pictures to facebook on my way back down.
The Piazza Michelangelo is located at the top of a rather large hill and the best way to make it on foot I found was to trudge up a long set of stairs, which when it's sunny and ~26 degrees had me sweating profusely by the time I reached the top.
However, the walk was well worth it. The view of the city from the Piazza is absolutely stunning. There really is not much more to say then that. You can see the whole city from the top. Also, there was tones of tourists abound. Always nice to hear English being spoken, which is not too uncommon.
After that, I headed to the local Games Workshop store to enquire about playing some games of 40k. The fellow who worked there spoke quite good English. After hearing I was from Canada, (which he said in his mind contains nothing but trees and snow from pictures he's seen) asked if I had been to Monteral. He saw the Cirque De Solei in Italy and claims it's his favourite thing ever. He has all the DVD's. He said he wanted to visit Montreal and Quebec. He also was rather pleased to hear that Montreal is in Quebec, and I said he should cross the Border to Ontario and visit Ottawa too, as it's not too far from there. He also said that he'd rather speak English then Italian and liked the practice I gave him. My Italian in reponse is pretty non-existant. However, I bought the Italian "Space Marine Del Caos" codex and he said to stop by some day to play some 40k.
I ran into the girls we had dinner with the other night across from the studio at around 12:00. We got pizza from a local place (which was in my opinion overpriced considering the 6 euro entire pizza and pop I got yesterday). We then went to the train station to get a student bus pass, however it required paperwork we didn't have, as well as photos. The later we tried to get from those '5 minute photo' booths, with the four of us quickly switching out while the booth took four photos.
The fellow who helped us at the train station didn't even look like an employee. He was wearing shades, jeans and had Ipod chords hanging around his neck. The only reason we knew he was legitimate was when he briefly appeared behind the ticket office booth. He basically told us that they don't check what school we are actually from, so we can say we are from any school they support to get the cards,
We wandered around until 3:30, where we met up at the Studio with the other students our Prof Sarah and our Art historian Peter. The studio is a two story apartment with bare rooms we can use as studio spaces. Three bathrooms (of which only two work). Also, the internet was not working in the place. I couldn't figure it out. We got keys though, which is good. We also got our course outlines and information that tomorrow at nine we'll be meeting at the studio to check out the Piazza Michelangelo..Which I had just been too ha ha. My house mates, as well the the three girls who live nearby went to the bike rental shop to check out prices. Two of the girls rented bikes as well as one of my house mates. It was getting close to seven, so I proceeded home. Got a bit disoriented on my way and I didn't get home until close to eight. Made a simple (but tasty) pasta dinner with lots of cheese, peppers and onions and watched the "Big Lebowski" while the others went out.
Tonight I intend to get to bed before 11pm..Should be earlier too. No reliable internet yet, but we've found a pretty good deal from the local company called "TIM".
Anyway, goodnight.
~Jared.
